WHY AN ASTHMA SCHOOL ?
From my experience derived by handling asthmatic patients for many years I came to the conclusion that there is no use to subscribe the most expensive medications or to perform the most detailed laboratory investigation while the patient goes to bed and sleep every night along with the house dust mites that have infested his/her mattress and pillow ! Busy physicians perhaps do not have the time to educate their patients about the allergens involved in their allergies, the mechanisms of their disease or the possible side-effects of the medications prescribed. It is my belief that only those who are well informed about their allergy will get the most from therapy and help administered by their Allergist. Therefore, this "Asthma School" will try to fill the gap and give allergic patients suffering from asthma a lot of information on issues relevant to their bronchial asthma. If you have any questions about asthma or allergies in general, please do not hesitate to e-mail me (see at the end of the page). In collaboration with your doctor we will find the most suitable solution for your case.

WHAT IS ASTHMA
Asthma is a disease characterized by an increased responsiveness of the trachea and bonchi to various stimuli and manifested by widespread narrowing of the airways that changes in severity, either spontaneously or as a result of treatment. In this definition the key words are: airways disease, hyperresponsiveness, obstruction and reversibility. Most of the times, rhinitis (sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itching, conjunctivitis) accompanies or preceeds bronchial asthma. Understanding the meaning and significance of these special aspects will provide an appreciation of the symptoms, altered lung function, diagnostic features and most important, treatment.
